The city of Pretoria proper is host to a population that is overwhelmingly white in a country that is 80% black.  This must be unique on the African Continent.

In 1910, Pretoria became one of the three capitals of the Union of South Africa, the entity that succeeded the South African Republic, after the Second Boer War. Pretoria has retained its statute as the executive (administrative) capital of present-day Republic of South Africa (founded in 1961). Pretoria is twined with Amman, Kiev, Tehran, etc.

 

Entering Pretoria, the visitor is hit by the solemn vision of multiple purple flowers in the streets, the gardens and the parks.  They come from the Jaracanda trees, imported from Australia, that have loaned their patronym to the city itself.

 

The most imposing monument in Pretoria is the Voortreekker Monument. It commemorates the victory of the Afrikaners, led by Andres Pretorius, over the Zulus. Pretoria is named after Pretorius.  The Voortreekker Monument cannot be described, you just have to see it.

 

Pretoria has several points of historical importance:

  • Union Building with a 9-meter tall statue of Nelson Mandela (great for picture)
  • Freedom Park
  • Church Square
  • Paul Kruger Museum
  • Government House (national palace)

 

Pretoria is also known as the academic city of South Africa. An estimated 27,000 students live there. They come from as far as Nigeria and Egypt.

Before embarking in the Northward 70-km trek to Pretoria, the travelers spent their morning at Gold Reef City, not far from the Cradle of Humankind, 15 km away from Rosebank.

 

Gold Reef City is a theme park built over a gold mine that closed in 1971.  There, you relive the ambiance, the décor, and the lives of the gold miners. The Apartheid Museum is nearby.

 

After returning Pretoria, we had our Red Carpet Dinner at Parea at Rosebank Restaurant. Oh my God, that was such a fluke. The place was nothing like the online pictures and the written description forwarded to the agency that handled the group.  Nothing close to Katzy’s. It is a second-class bar restaurant, with no runway space for the red carpet show.

However, the night was saved by a set of magnificent entertainment (singers and belly dancers) and a delicious sit-down dinner. If elegant class was absent, the remainder was excellent.

 

In a few hours, we will fly off to a pilgrimage at Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in captivity.
