Since its conception in 1537, Asuncion has always been inhabited. It has never faded away from its role as the political, economic, and cultural capital of Paraguay. Moreover, it has played a regional role of Mother City by being the springboard that launched numerous expeditions toward all corners of the continent, with the goal of staring new cities such as Buenos Aires.

Its patronym came from the religious assumption of Virgin Mary that is feted on August 15. It is the proud twin city for Rosario, Sao Paolo, Miami, among others.

Touristic attractions are few or in between, but there are much that a tourist can take advantage of, such the great shopping bargains, the cut-rate menus at the restaurants, and the permanent perception of safety. The locals are genuinely pleasant, and you will not meet a girl who will not smile at you.

For the comparison’s sake, Asuncion shares much of Havana, Cuba. The only problem is the growing number of the squatters areas (favelas) caused by urbanization, gentrification, and deforestation.

During your time in Asuncion, you must do to three things:

  1. Take a long walk on Calle Palma with your credit card in hand
  2. Spend an hour on the Costanera, the promenade around the bay.
  3. Eat solely the typical local cuisine.

 

You will also be stunned by the quality, the price tags on display at the megamalls such as Shopping del Sol. Why would you want to fly to Miami, if Asuncion is closer? Mostly, in a place where hotels are much cheaper, and traffic is quasi-inexistent outside of rush hour.

 

At night, music is everywhere. Nightclubs and bars are too numerous to count, so no one stands in line. You may experience some difficulty to spend the $20 you will carry in your pocket since a beer costs $1.00.

The population of Asuncion is 600,000, but 2.2 million people (a third of the nation) reside in the metropolitan area; 65% of the population is younger than 30. But looking at the dance partners of these oh-so-pretty girls at the nightclubs, it is safe to assume that racial and age discrimination do not exist on the land of de Francia and Stroessner.
